All the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation are determined to stand on firmly among nations of the world through their own unremitting struggle, and no force can stop this common national aspiration.

In a meeting this morning at the Great Hall of the People with the Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), Lien Chan, and accompanying Taiwanese leaders from all sectors, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CCP) Central Committee, stressed that it is the collective responsibility of the new CCP Central Committee leadership to continue to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the peaceful “reunification”1 of the country.

Xi Jinping said that over the years, cross-Strait relations have seen a series of significant positive developments that have maintained peace in the Taiwan Strait region and enhanced the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. This is in line with the shared aspirations of Chinese people on both sides of the Strait and the overall interests of the Chinese nation. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family bound by blood. The safeguarding and advancement of the rights and interests of our compatriots in Taiwan is a public declaration made repeatedly by the mainland, and a solemn commitment by the leadership of the new CCP Central Committee. We remain committed to the major principles and policies on work related to Taiwan, consistently adhere to the one-China principle, continue to promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, strive to promote the united efforts of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and consolidate and deepen the political, economic, cultural, and social foundations for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out that although cross-Strait relations have gone through ups and downs, we were ultimately able to break the long-standing barriers and initiate exchanges and cooperation. Xi Jinping emphasized that looking forward, we will be more capable of promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. Of course, we are fully aware that there are still historical issues in cross-Strait relations, and new issues will surface on the way forward. It takes time and patience to solve these issues, and joint efforts are needed. As long as both sides of the Taiwan Strait uphold the national ideal, reinforce the foundation of opposing “Taiwan independence” and adhering to the “1992 Consensus,” and enhance the common ground of maintaining the one-China framework, the prospects for cross-Strait cooperation in all sectors are broad and bright. As the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations continues to bear new fruits, we believe that more compatriots in Taiwan will realize that Taiwan’s future lies in the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and in the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Xi Jinping pointed out we have always approached the development of cross-Strait relations from the perspective of the development of the whole nation. The mainland and Taiwan are bound together in a community of common destiny. Since the beginning of modern times, the Chinese nation has been abused by foreign powers. When we think of that humiliating history, every Chinese person feels heartbroken. The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream of the Chinese nation in modern times. Now, we are more confident and capable than ever before in history of realizing this dream. “When brothers are united, nothing can stand in their path.” The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation requires the joint efforts of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We sincerely hope that Taiwan will develop together with the mainland, and that compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will come together to realize the “Chinese Dream.” Working together to promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation should be the main theme of cross-Strait relations and the common mission of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Lien Chan expressed that the “Common Vision for Peaceful Development across the Taiwan Strait”2 has been gradually implemented over the past few years and has the support of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is a correct path that should not and will not be reversed. Cross-Strait relations as they stand now were achieved through hard work. Hopefully we can build on the new starting point and go further. The one-China principle is implemented in the laws and institutions of both sides, and Taiwan is certainly part of China, as the mainland is also part of China, thus cross-Strait relations are a matter of two parts of one China, rather than between two countries. This is the foundation of the “1992 Consensus,” which is the basis of mutual political trust between the two sides and must be maintained.
连战表示，这几年“两岸和平发展共同愿景”得以逐步落实，得到两岸人民支持。两岸关系和平发展是一条不应也不会逆转的正确道路。现阶段两岸关系来之不易，希望能在新的起点上加以深化。两岸各自的法律、体制都实施一个中国原则，台湾固然是中国的一部分，大陆也是中国的一部分，从而形成“一中架构”下的两岸关系，而不是国与国的关系。“九二共识”由此产生，这是双方政治互信的基础，必须加以维护。
Lien Chan stressed that the two sides must “seek common ground within the one-China framework while maintaining differences” on the basis of opposing “Taiwan independence” and adhering to the “1992 Consensus.” The people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to the same Chinese nation and are all Chinese people nurtured by the same Chinese culture. It is only logical that we strengthen the bonds between compatriots, help and understand each other, and reject division and move towards integration. The development of cross-Strait relations is the cause of the whole nation and the common wish of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We must bring into play the wisdom of the Chinese nation as a whole, integrate for mutual benefit, revitalize China, and usher in a new era of national glory.
连战强调，双方应在反对“台独”、坚持“九二共识”基础上“求一中架构之同，存一中内涵之异”。两岸人民同属中华民族，都是受中华文化熏陶的中国人，理所当然应增进同胞情谊，互助互谅，拒绝分裂，走向融合。发展两岸关系是全民族的事业，也是两岸人民共同的心愿。我们要发挥中华民族整体智慧，互利融合，振兴中华，开创民族辉煌的新时代。

Samuel Yin, Wu Ching-ji, Hsing Yun, and other representatives of Taiwan’s economic, cultural, and religious sectors spoke at the meeting, expressing support for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and willingness to make positive efforts to strengthen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation in various sectors.
