On the afternoon of March 4, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee, president of the country and chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited with members of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, and the Taiwan Solidarity Union who attended the third session of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and listened to their opinions and suggestions. He stressed that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is the right path to maintain peace across the Taiwan Strait, promote common development, and benefit compatriots on both sides of the Strait, and is also a path of great promise that will lead to peaceful “reunification.”1 We must unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development, adhere to the common political foundation, work for the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, and unswervingly join hands to achieve national rejuvenation. Yu Zhengsheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CCP Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, attended the visit and discussion.

At the joint meeting, 11 members including Zheng Jianbang, Yang Jian, Wen Xueqiong, Ji Bin, Li Aijun, Luo Shaming, Zheng Guangtai, Liu Jiaqiang, Hu Youqing, Feng Gong, and Fu Huimin spoke on the issues of promoting peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, furthering the ideal of one family across the Taiwan Strait, deepening cross-Strait exchange and cooperation, strengthening cross-Strait exchange among the younger generations, promoting sustainable and healthy economic and social development, advancing cross-Strait cultural industry cooperation, and speeding up the construction of Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone.
联组会上，郑建邦、杨健、温雪琼、纪斌、李霭君、骆沙鸣、郑广台、刘家强、胡有清、冯巩、傅惠民等11位委员，围绕推动两岸关系和平发展、促进两岸一家亲理念深入人心、深化两岸交流合作、加强两岸青少年交流、推动经济社会持续健康发展、推进两岸文化产业合作、加快推进平潭综合实验区建设等问题先后发言。
Xi Jinping delivered an important speech after listening carefully to all speakers. He began by expressing that the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang and the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League are close friends of the Chinese Communist Party, and the Taiwan Solidarity Union is a patriotic popular group of Taiwan compatriots, which has done much to promote the development of cross-Strait relations for a long time. They have put forward valuable opinions and suggestions in their speeches, and relevant authorities must pay great attention and give careful consideration. Xi Jinping pointed out that 2014 was a very unusual year in China’s development. In the face of a complex and ever-changing international environment and the daunting task of domestic reform, development, and stability, the CCP Central Committee has united and led the people of all ethnic groups, adhered to the general principle of pursuing progress while ensuring stability, adapted to the new normal of economic development, comprehensively advanced economic, political, cultural, social, ecological, and national defense and military construction, steadily pushed forward various reforms, accelerated the promotion of the rule of law, actively carried out all-round diplomacy, resolutely opposed and corrected the “Four Winds”2 issue, and steadfastly opposed corruption, making significant new progress in all areas of work.
习近平指出，2014年是我国发展进程中很不寻常的一年。面对复杂多变的国际环境和艰巨繁重的国内改革发展稳定任务，中共中央团结带领全国各族人民，坚持稳中求进工作总基调，适应经济发展新常态，全面推进经济建设、政治建设、文化建设、社会建设、生态文明建设以及国防和军队建设，蹄疾步稳推进各项改革，加快推进依法治国，积极开展全方位外交，坚决反对和纠治“四风”问题，坚定不移反对腐败，各项工作取得新的重大进展。
Xi Jinping emphasized that in the past year, we have remained committed to major principles and policies on work related to Taiwan, made new achievements in cross-Strait institutionalized consultations, deepened cross-Strait economic integration and development, maintained good momentum in exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and maintained overall stability in the Taiwan Strait. Fundamentally, the key factor in determining the direction of cross-Strait relations is the development and progress of the mainland. We must maintain the momentum of our own development, while taking the right policy measures to properly work on Taiwan issues.
习近平强调，过去的一年，我们坚持对台工作大政方针和决策部署，两岸制度化协商取得新成果，两岸经济融合发展不断深入，各领域交流合作保持良好发展势头，台海局势总体稳定。从根本上说，决定两岸关系走向的关键因素是祖国大陆发展进步。我们要保持自身发展势头，同时采取正确政策措施做好台湾工作。
Xi Jinping pointed out that over the past eight years, cross-Strait relations have embarked on a path of peaceful development, undergoing historic and profound changes that demonstrate the prospects of win-win cooperation. Peace is precious, and it needs to be preserved. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait must draw lessons from and carefully safeguard the fruits of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
习近平指出，8年来，两岸关系走上了和平发展道路，两岸关系发生历史性的深刻变化，展现了合作共赢的前景。和平是宝贵的，和平需要维护。两岸同胞要总结两岸关系和平发展的经验，精心维护两岸关系和平发展成果。
Xi Jinping emphasized that the “1992 Consensus” has played an irreplaceable and crucial role in building mutual political trust, initiating negotiations, and improving and developing cross-Strait relations. If the common political foundation between the two sides is destroyed, there will be no mutual trust across the Strait, and cross-Strait relations will slip back into the old path of turmoil and unrest. We have always taken adherence to the “1992 Consensus” as the basis and condition for our interaction with the authorities and political parties in Taiwan, the core of which is the recognition that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China. As long as this is done, there will be no obstacles for any political party or group in Taiwan to interact with the mainland. The “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and their activities are undermining national sovereignty and territorial integrity, attempting to provoke confrontation between people and societies on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and severing the spiritual ties between compatriots on both sides of the Strait, which is the greatest obstacle to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We must unswervingly oppose them. Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait must remain vigilant against the forces of “Taiwan independence.”
习近平强调，“九二共识”对两岸建立政治互信、开展对话协商、改善和发展两岸关系，发挥了不可替代的重要作用。如果两岸双方的共同政治基础遭到破坏，两岸互信将不复存在，两岸关系就会重新回到动荡不安的老路上去。我们始终把坚持“九二共识”作为同台湾当局和各政党开展交往的基础和条件，核心是认同大陆和台湾同属一个中国。只要做到这一点，台湾任何政党和团体同大陆交往都不会存在障碍。“台独”分裂势力及其活动损害国家主权和领土完整，企图挑起两岸民众和社会对立、割断两岸同胞精神纽带，是两岸关系和平发展的最大障碍，是台海和平稳定的最大威胁，必须坚决反对。两岸同胞要对“台独”势力保持高度警惕。
Xi Jinping pointed out that the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait is our focus and anchor point for the development of cross-Strait relations. The peaceful development of cross-Strait relations must be promoted and maintained by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, who share its benefits. Our focus on the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will not change, and our policies and measures to create real benefit for compatriots in Taiwan will not change, either. We do care about opinions and suggestions from all sectors in Taiwan, especially the grassroots, and are willing to learn about the ideas and needs of our compatriots there. We welcome more Taiwan compatriots to participate in the process of cross-Strait exchange and to become supporters and contributors to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. We will continue to strengthen communication between compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, implement policies and laws that benefit people on both sides, and expand the availability and access of such benefits to the grassroots in Taiwan. We are willing to share opportunities for development in the mainland with the compatriots in Taiwan and to provide Taiwan’s youth with a venue to exercise their talents and realize their ambitions, so that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations will bring new momentum and expand new space for their growth, achievement, and success.

Xi Jinping stressed that national rejuvenation and people’s happiness is the common pursuit of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese Dream is not only about the country and nation, but also about every son and daughter of the Chinese nation, including both sides of the Taiwan Strait. It is closely linked to everyone’s aspirations for a better life. In the history of the Chinese nation, compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have always been bound by the same destiny, in prosperity and turmoil. We on both sides of the Strait must join hands and work together to contribute wisdom and strength to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Xi Jinping hopes that the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, and the Taiwan Solidarity Union will fully grasp the CCP Central Committee’s major policies and decisions on Taiwan, give full play to the advantages of extensive contacts with Taiwan and overseas, closely liaise with compatriots in Taiwan, promote cross-Strait communication and economic and cultural exchanges, and promote compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to work together to realize the Chinese Dream.
习近平希望民革、台盟、台联各位委员深刻领会中共中央对台大政方针和决策部署，充分发挥同台湾地区和海外联系广泛的优势，密切同台湾同胞的联系，促进两岸人员往来和经济文化交流，推动两岸同胞携手共圆中国梦。
He also hopes that CPPCC members will take up their responsibilities, strive to improve their abilities, maintain good public image, be aware of their positions, understand how the CPPCC works, and be masters of consultation and politics, so as to contribute to the right issue with the right timing and supervise on critical points. They must expand their knowledge across all fields, conduct solid research, consciously practice the core socialist values, hold to the moral bottom line, stay within the legal red line, and consciously exercise integrity and self-discipline.
习近平还希望全国政协委员勇于担当责任、着力提高能力素质、保持良好形象、增强委员意识，懂政协、会协商、善议政，做到建言建在需要时、议政议到点子上、监督监在关键处。要广泛学习各方面知识，扎实开展调查研究，自觉践行社会主义核心价值观，守往道德底线，不碰法律红线，自觉廉洁自律。
