Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee, met with People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong and his delegation at the Great Hall of the People on the morning of May 7. Xi emphasized that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is a collective choice made by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in response to the tide of history. As long as we all recognize the value of “one family across the Taiwan Strait” and treat each other with sincerity, there is no issue that cannot be resolved, nor any difficulty that cannot be overcome.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is stable and has withstood all tests. With decades of ups and downs behind us, the general trend in cross-Strait relations is one of forward development, which is a historical certainty. Peaceful development is the common pursuit of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the two sides share the benefits of this development. Our policy of promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations will not change, nor will we abandon our pragmatic initiatives to promote cross-Strait exchange and cooperation for mutual benefit, nor will we weaken our sincere enthusiasm to unite our compatriots in Taiwan for our common goal, nor will we waver in our strong will to stop the separatist plot of “Taiwan independence.” We sincerely hope that Taiwan will enjoy social stability, economic growth, and improvement of people’s livelihood, and that our compatriots in Taiwan will lead a peaceful and happy life.

Xi Jinping expressed that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations has a long way to go and requires in-depth mutual trust between compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. When compatriots trust each other, it is easy to find solutions to many difficulties. We must actively create conditions to expand the contact between people from all walks of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, improve face-to-face communication and heart-to-heart exchanges, constantly improve cross-Strait understanding, and close psychological distance.
习近平表示，两岸关系和平发展任重道远，需要加深两岸同胞相互信任。同胞有了互信，很多难题就容易找到解决办法。我们要积极创造条件，扩大两岸社会各界各阶层民众的接触面，面对面沟通，心与心交流，不断增进理解，拉近心理距离。
Xi Jinping emphasized that there is a bright prospect for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, and that we must continue to forge ahead. The mainland’s comprehensive deepening of reform and opening up will provide strong impetus and favorable conditions for cross-Strait economic cooperation. Economic integration is beneficial to both sides of the Taiwan Strait for mutual benefit and should not be interfered with at any time. We will listen more closely to the actual needs of the people in Taiwan, especially the grassroots, and take active and effective measures to cater to the disadvantaged groups so that more people in Taiwan can benefit from cross-Strait economic exchanges and cooperation.
习近平强调，两岸关系和平发展前景广阔，应该继续开拓进取。大陆全面深化改革和扩大对外开放，将为两岸经济合作带来强劲动力和有利条件。经济融合有利两岸互利双赢，任何时候都不应受到干扰。我们将深入了解台湾民众尤其是基层民众的现实需求，采取积极有效措施，照顾弱势群体，使更多台湾民众在两岸经济交流合作中受益。
Xi Jinping pointed out that youths hold the key to the future of cross-Strait relations. We need to work out more ways of facilitating interactions and contact between young people on both sides of the Straits, ensuring that they recognize the trend of peaceful development across the Straits and that they feel the momentum behind the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. This will put them in the position to shoulder the responsibility of opening up a new chapter in cross-Strait relations and making the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation a reality.
习近平指出，两岸青少年身上寄托着两岸关系的未来。要多想些办法，多创造些条件，让他们多来往、多交流，感悟到两岸关系和平发展的潮流，感悟到中华民族伟大复兴的趋势，以后能够担当起开拓两岸关系前景、实现民族伟大复兴的重任。
During the meeting, Xi Jinping spoke highly of the significant contribution of James Soong and the PFP in promoting a historic turnaround in cross-Strait relations. We hope that the PFP will adhere to the one-China position, continue to oppose the separatist attempts of “Taiwan independence,” and work with people from all sectors in Taiwan to firmly safeguard the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and continuously promote the overall interests of the Chinese nation.

James Soong expressed that the fundamental belief of the PFP in adhering to the one-China principle and opposing “Taiwan independence” has never wavered. The PFP will adhere to the right track of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, uphold the idea of “ties of kinship between the two sides,” strengthen cross-Strait dialogues and exchanges, enhance political mutual trust, promote compatriots’ spiritual ties, and strive to realize the shared ideal of the Chinese Dream.
宋楚瑜表示，亲民党坚守两岸一中、反对“台独”的基本信念从未动摇，将继续坚持两岸关系和平发展的正确方向，本着“两岸一家亲”的理念，加强两岸对话交流，增进政治互信，促进同胞心灵相通，为实现共圆中华梦的共同理想而努力。
